MY INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES

  • ANCESTRY/GENEALOGY:
I was born in a small town in Hungary located in the Bakony region of Fejér County (Megye) near
the cities of Bodajk, Mór, and Székesfehérvár (first capital of Hungary and seat of coronation).
  • My maternal ancestors left Slovakia and settled in the Bakony area in 1724.
They came from Trencsin and Nyitra counties of Slovakia.

  • The above counties in Slovakia have been Hungarian settlements since ~ 900AD
when Arpad and the Magyar Tribes first settled there.
  • My paternal ancestors are from a small town in Zala County,
  • near the Croatian border and close to the Mura River.

I grew up in Chicago, IL (USA) and the South Suburbs.
Later I moved to the Gulf (of Mexico) Coast of Florida.

MY HISTORY WITH AMAZON.COM REVIEWS:

(ADDENDUM: This section has had no impact whatsoever on my getting more positive votes or an improved ranking number on Amazon.com [for reviews, that is]! Yes! Really!)

I began by primarily reviewing Balkan and Central European music but expanded to include a large variety of books and  films, many international (DVDs) because traditional music just does not get a large readership.

My  first 200 or so reviews are of international/traditional/world music CDs from Hungary, Romania, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, Scandinavia (Nordic), Gypsy (Roma), Israeli & Asian .

Around Spring 2007 an attack of negative votes began on my reviews which lasted almost a year: spammers/trolls who visited the Amazon Reviewers Discussion Board were driven by false beliefs/assumptions that no one would write reviews for free on a regular basis. Therefore, they believed reviewers receivied some form of compensation. Some accusations left in the comments section went along these lines: "sounds like a blurb from inside a CD" or "sounds like something copied from a jacket cover" or "that is a summary, it is not a review, a review is not like an essay assignment for school". My only response is:  well that is what I wrote regardless of what it sounds like and it is ALL ORIGINAL AND WRITTEN BY ME.  You can agreee or disagree with just one vote, be it positive or negative.

My sole reason for reviewing was to share my love of traditional music which translates into lively, upbeat, and joyous 4 or 5 star reviews.  Since reviewing is a hobby, it is done voluntarily, there is no reason for me to review what I do not like! This means you will not find many 1 or 2 star reviews.  This is a hobby not a job. Many Top Badge Reviewers who posted on the DB were attacked from late 2007 into mid 2008 for expressing these sentiments. Since music reviews of CDs from the Balkans, Central and Eastern Europe typically receives limited readership or attention, I expanded my reviews to include books and films, primarily internatonal.

Amazon limits the specific number of votes (+/-) per day (believed to be 5)  that any one person may give to one reviewer. There is also an unknown TOTAL LIMIT of life time votes one person may give to any one reviewer. Once that limit is reached, the voter is labelled "fan" and their votes (+ or -) no longer register on the product page nor do they show up on the reviewers page. This means a "fan" can not influence the "ranking number" of a reviewer.

July 2015, Amazon again revised their method of registering votes on reviews. The most current review by date is 'spot-lighted', i. e. prominently placed on the left side of the product page where it is more visible and has an advantage to attract more reader/votes. Also the reviews with the most positive votes are Spot Lighted in this prominent location - unless another review gets *more* possies which bumps the older review out of the spot light.

Aug 2015, another helpful change was made by amazon: a reviewer may not "wash reviews". "Washing reviews" means to delete the review and afterwards reposts the same review. All votes (positive and negative)  are erased/removed which essentially clears the negative votes of changing "ranking number.".  Most often reviewers *washed* reviews to remove "revenge" neg votes.  Some readers of reviews deliberately gave negative votes to knock someone else's review out of the spot light, hoping theirs got placed in a better slot.

I have enjoyed writing reviews but I have decreased the number written in the past several years.  No relative ever voted on any of my reviews [they are all in Hungary and do not even know about amazon.com]. If any friends voted on a review, it was by chance and I do not know about it unless individual left comment. If I discovered anyone who was giving me frequent positives on a regular basis, I put a stop to it. I don't discuss this hobby with friends ...

AMAZON removed reviews at the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017 for reasons unknown, as they did not write a letter to reviewers explaining why.

I had a total of about 843 reviews at the time. I don't have the date when I first noticed 25 - 30 reviews were missing. Since then I slowed down in

the reviewing process. I just felt it was not worth doing if REVIEWS can be removed without explanation. Couild be there were too many or they were

too old. I am only guessing ...

LOST TOP REVIEWER BADGE WITH THIS RANK: 1,103 on Dec. 18, 2011.

Under new system would have had TOP 1000 REVIEWER badge until Nov. 2011.

CLASSICAL Amazon.com (USA)

TOP 1,000 BADGE: 1/20/04 and TOP 500 BADGE: 3/16/05

US amazon.com *new* rank # 505 as of 5/27/2010.

BEST CLASSICAL RANK = #183
REVIEWS: 639 . POSITIVE VOTES: 6480.

NOTE: fan votes and negative attack votes were removed by amazon and are done so on a regular basis.

Sept. 2008 *before* the changes : my "classic rank" was #173  based on 8,138 positive votes with total votes of 9,617 (approximately).

Amazon.com changed how they calculate the ranking system by removing votes attributed to fans during Oct. 2008 - Dec. 2008.  Fans are frequent voters which they deemed biased.

I was attributed 630 "fans" on 10/24/08. Fan statistic was 664 on 1/03/2009. Then  fan number decreased to 143. Oct. 2009 fans were 80.  On Dec. 18, 2011 I had 87 fans.  As of July 31, 2015 : 101 fans per amazon after which amazon stopped posting this statistic for public viewing.

I had a CLASSICAL TOP 500 REVIEWER badge up until Dec. 8, 2011 until the system changed once more! Amazon created a "Hall of Fame" badge to honor *only* TOP 10 REVIEWERS. NOTE: under the *NEW* ranking system, I would have had a "TOP 1000 REVIEWER" badge for the past year ... Lately, I simply do not review enough to earn a badge.
